FINAL ROUND On Friday the 27th April we completed our final round of league matches at La Sella and the Villaitana Levante courses. What a fantastic and surprising end to the season! Despite not playing today, having completed their matches last month, I am delighted to announce the new Champions of Division 1 are CL Golf (Campbell Lamont Golf). Winners for the first time but probably not the last, we congratulate Colin Cooper and his team on their tremendous success. Campbell himself did contribute occasionally during the season but being the shy and retiring type we’re sure he won’t dwell too much on that! It was the closest end to the season we have ever had with any one of 4 teams being able to win the title or be relegated subject to the final day’s results. El Patio needed 9 points to win and retain the title against already relegated Montgo but fell 1 point short with two vital games being halved! Oliva Nova looked the favourites to take the 2nd relegation spot needing a minimum of 7 points in their game against Levante. In the shock of the round they not only got the 7 points needed but won all 10 condemning Levante to relegation after just 1 season back in the top flight. Congratulations to Colin Foster and his team for a tremendous comeback but commiserations to Martin Gates and his Levante team who have had up to now an excellent season. The problem, if you can call it that, is that all the teams have improved in this division and were very equal and we would like to congratulate all the teams for making this one of the most competitive seasons ever! This was demonstrated by Don Cayo who in their first season in this division won their final game convincingly on their opponent’s home course! It will only improve next year with the two class acts joining them!! Division 2 was no less exciting with Pego already crowned Champions and the battle for the second promotion place being fought out by the Costa Blanca and Orba Warblers. Many congratulations to John Chessher and his Pego team for an excellent season and gaining their rightful place back in Division 1. They are one of the strongest societies but their permanent base at Oliva Nova can be a disadvantage when playing away from there next season as shown by their loss yesterday to CL Golf La Sella, but maybe that was just an end of season blip. CL Golf La Sella’s win shows that they have now found their feet and are going to be a force to be reckoned with next season. The Costa Blanca and Orba Warblers had a tremendous battle with the Warblers winning a closely fought contest. Unfortunately they needed 1 more win and the Costa Blanca gained enough points to claim the 2nd promotion place. Congratulations to Angel Centenera and his team on a much improved season and if they can keep the standard of the team playing yesterday they will be difficult to beat next season! Commiserations to David Knight and his team who played great golf on the day and with a little more consistency would have been promoted, but it all looks good for next season. All the matches were played in a tremendous spirit which carried onto the bar terrace afterwards, thank you to all!
