History of the Orba Warblers Golfing Society

The origins of the formation of the Orba Warblers Golfing Society lay to some extent in the Island of Jersey. When Bert & Brenda Cook decided to retire and move from the Island to the Costa Blanca, they were both given presents of sets of clubs. When they arrived in Spain, they met through their membership of the recently formed Careline Theatre Group in 1995 some like minded individuals who had golfing ambitions and in the Cheers Bar in Orba on New Years Eve of that year, the Warblers gave birth. There were seven original members, of which two still play with the Society today - Bert and Bill Parsons. So why the name, well Orba was the place where the Society was formed and the original magnificent seven fancied themselves as singers and hence the word “Warbler”.

To find somewhere to play in 1996 was quite difficult but it did coincide with the opening of Oliva Nova and the Warblers were the first Society to play the then new course. This is still very much our home course and over the years we have been able to develop an excellent relationship with the management of the Club.

From its small beginnings as a fun society, the Warblers has now grown to a membership of 100, with today perhaps a greater emphasis on the golf although social events still play an important part in our annual calendar.

All the work in running the Society was undertaken by Brenda with Bert’s assistance until three years ago when the work became too much for one person and we now have a working committee chaired by our Captain, who is elected for a one year term. Bert and Brenda were elected Life Members in acknowledgement of their contribution to the Society since its formation.
